The Bible is the story of God’s rescue mission, written with love for our benefit and hope. The Bible is also thick, intimidating, and (at times) confusing and shocking. It can be discouraging to try to read the Bible all the way through, only to get lost in the brambles of Leviticus or Numbers. But here’s the truth: God intended His word to be accessible to us, not to confuse us or discourage us. God’s word is our clearest picture of His character and love, woven throughout time and history. So the question is: How do we engage with the Bible in a way that reveals God’s love, character, and intentionality to us?
In light of this question, we have created the Story Reading Plan, a yearlong narrative journey through scripture. Will this plan have you reading every single word of the bible? No it will not. Instead, this plan is focused on drawing connections between the stories of the Old Testament (pre-Jesus), and the stories of the New Testament (Jesus’ life and the first church). Here’s how it will work:
The Story series is broken up into “volumes,” kind of like chapters in a book. At the start of each volume, we will send out an email letting you know the title, and sending you a link to that volume’s readings and resources (for example: volume one is called “how it began” and you can access those resources here). Each week, you’ll be given a few chapters of the Bible to read at your own pace (either in your physical bible, or by following the links provided). You can journal, look at the footnotes, talk about it with your pastor/mentor, or any other extras that you want. We have also provided some links to The Bible Project summary videos if you’re interested in a wider overview of scripture (each video is about 6 minutes long and AWESOME. We highly recommend them to you!). Also, if you’ve got kiddos (or if you are a kiddo on the inside) we’ve included a plan for the Jesus Storybook Bible, an incredible children’s bible that we think all kids (and grownups) should read (purchase here). If you would like a more in-depth comprehensive view of scripture in it’s entirety, we recommend this BibleJourney class from Gordon Conwell Seminary, or this word-for-word reading plan from the Bible Project. These are a bit more of a time commitment for anyone who is interested.
